Gipsbergbau Engel GmbH
The company „Sartor & Engel“ was founded in 1946 as a plaster works and building materials trade.
With the aim of being able to concentrate better on the individual company divisions, the business divisions were separated: In the 1970s, „Gipsbergbau Engel GmbH“, headed by Peter Engel, focussed on the extraction of natural gypsum and anhydrite rock.
In the 1980s, the „Horst-Peter-Stollen“ mine in Ralingen was newly developed, primarily to increase capacity and expand the quality spectrum. Under the management of his son Horst Engel, this subsequently developed into one of the most efficient underground mines in Germany.
Since his death, his wife, Lydia Engel, has continued to run the company. Under her management, environmental and health protection have become even more important. The natural gypsum and anhydrite rock from Ralingen is now a highly sought-after ecological raw material - in cement production and in many other applications, for example as a natural fertiliser.
