Gipsbergbau Engel GmbH
Created in 1946, Sartor & Engel specialized in plaster production and building material supplies.
Subsequently, these two business activities were completely separated, so that each could focus on their specific sector. In the 1970s, with Peter Engel at the helm, Gipsbergbau Engel GmbH began to specialize in the extraction of natural gypsum-anhydrite rock.
During the 1980s, the company opened the Horst-Peter-Stollen mine to increase its production capacity and expand its range of quality grades. Under the leadership of Horst Engel, the founder’s son, the business continued to develop, becoming one of the most successful underground mines in Germany.
Since his death, the company has been managed by his widow, Lydia Engel. She has put environmental protection and occupational health at the forefront of the company’s strategy. Today, natural gypsum and anhydrite rock from Ralingen is in high demand as an environmentally friendly raw material for cement production and many other applications, such as natural fertilizer.
